BREAKING THE GLASS CEILING
"BEST WAY TO BREAK THE GLASS
CEILING IS TO OWN IT "
The "Glass Ceiling" is a term given to the invisible obstacles sometimes found in the workforce. The
barriers that limit the progress of women and minority towards employment equity extend from the
glass ceiling at the top of corporation to the floor of low paying jobs in the labour market .These barriers
are created by a process of exclusion that continuously eliminates women, minorities and other
underprivileged groups from being candidates of higher positions .When a company exercises this type
of discrimination ,they make this behaviour seem acceptable .This ''glass ceiling'' is still very much a
part of the corporate world today as it was many years ago, people who feel that they have had their
opportunities blocked also feel that their aspirations have been limited.
The biggest example is of Hillary clinton, the presidential candidate for the democratic party. I can't
overstate how groundbreaking this is for United States and consequently other parts of the world .We
would be looking at the first woman president of the United States. There has never been a woman
nominee of a major political party, let alone a woman president, so Hillary becoming the democratic
nominee truly shattered the glass ceiling for women in america.
Madam C. J. Walker, who is the first woman in the US to become a millionaire, is also an example of a
woman who shattered the glass ceining. She was an entrepreneur, who, in the early 1900s became the
first woman to become the first self-made millionaire in the usa.
Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the academy award for the best director.
Geraldine Mock , is the first lady to fly solo around the world
Junko Tabei is the fist women to climb the Mount Everest.
And many more who broke the glass ceiling and proved to the world by their actions and achievements,
that women are not less than men. Women
have been moving parallel with men in every
context of life be it the opportunities present
on the ground or in the sky…..today women, from
different parts of the country are breaking the
glass ceiling and proving themselves. Women
nowadays are more educated and employed at
higher levels today than ever before ,but they
are still largely pigeonholed in "pink collar" jobs ,
according to American Association of University
Women (AAUM). Women leaders face many
unique challenges at the workplace brought on by
combination of social and cultural stereotyping,
gender violence which come about as a result of
traditional attitude, the challenge of leadership,
the challenge of family responsibilities, and that
from the women's own perspective inclination.
To conclude the following words are worth
noting,"Teach your daughters to worry less
about fitting into glass slippers and more about
shattering glass ceilings"
