ALUMNI SPEAKS...
We invited a few select alumni to share their stories on the the manner in which they fought, and
continue to fight, stereotypes linked with career, gender, class etc. in their life so far. Given below are
few extracts from their stories….
Gargi Mandal (2015-16)
Like every kid in India wishing to pursue medicine, Gargi wanted to get into
AIIMS Delhi. She had planned everything around it but didn’t make the
cut and was disheartened after the results. She wanted to apply to a few
colleges abroad and took a gap year. A gap year is generally frowned upon,
but she learned new things everyday like video editing, rafting and playing
the guitar. She claims to have learnt that going with the flow and adapting
to change is very important, because in the formative years of one’s career,
one needs to acknowledge that not everything will go as one plans. Right
now, she studies Biomedical Science at Kings College London, which is one of
the best Universities in the world, walks on the same roads that John Keats, one of her
favorite poets had once walked on, open to new challenges and opportunities every day.
Ankur (2014-15)
Ankur, like most young boys of our school, was a brilliant student yet in-
decisive about his future when he stepped into class XII in the spring of
the year 2014. With only one year to complete his high school, he was
un-sure if he wished to take up any clichéd career option or follow his
dream of pursuing a degree abroad. With immense pressure from both
his parents and peers, to take up a course in an esteemed DU college,
Ankur was gradually drifting away and was left confused.
Inspired during one of the several career-counselling sessions at SGS, Ankur
finally decided to take up a course in Public Relations and Business administration
from the State University of New York at Oswego. He is currently in his junior year at
the University and firmly believes that SGS, provided him with an extremely supportive
and inclusive environment, which greatly helped him in his personality development.
Vaibhav (2016-17)
Vaibhav is still remembered as a bright and sincere student, always wanting
to do and learn different things. Having achieved a good percentage in
class XII, Vaibhav could have easily secured a seat with any good college
in the Delhi University. But he chose a path that is known to only a few in
India. Inspired by the will to be different, Vaibhav enrolled for a Bachelor’s
in Design, a course not attempted by many. He specialises in “Industrial
Design” – a field that would open lucrative avenues but not many in India
choose it. Vaibhav feels that the staff and teachers at SGS, helped him
understand the different perspectives of life. He thinks that the school helped
him learn that an imaginative, focused and practical mind need not be bounded by the
strands of the social structure around it.
