          BE THE CHANGE!

          She wanted to fly,
          But patriarchy clipped her wings.
She wanted to soar in the sky,
But was pushed down by the weight of her wedding ring.

In a man ambition is awarded,
Any risks that he takes rewarded.
A woman, on the other hand, needs to know her place
And confirm to age-old traditions, rituals and ways!
“Being content is a virtue and ambition a vice!”, women are often told,
“Stick to the hearth and the home!” is the age-old lore!
For a single woman wedlock is seen as the ultimate goal,
And for a married woman, motherhood is the coveted role.
A working mother constantly worries about her home,
And the homemaker often feels marginalized, undervalued and alone.
Despite these shackles, there will always be a Mary Kom,
The fierce boxer who continues to prove her detractors wrong.
There will also always be a Sushmita Sen,
Who defied patriarchy and chose an uncharted way.
There will always be strong, bold and valiant women,
          Courageous, unapologetic and independent women!
Let us be those women, befriend those women and encourage those women,
Let us raise our daughter to be such women, and our sons to appreciate those women.
We must be the change we wish to see,
And break the shackles of archaic customs and oppressive patriarchy.
