Parental Tipss Adolescent Education

Adolescence is a significant phase in a person's psychological development. An adolescent child is no longer a child, but not considered an adult too. He/She confronts various societal rolls which are essential for meeting the challenges of adulthood. Thus, parents are required to handle this period of their child's life with great responsibility.

Parents must show confidence in the adolescent’s activities. They should not simply spell out the dictates for their child rather, should justify their stand while setting any rule for them. Proper explanation must be given by them so that the child can understand his / her parent’s reaction towards a given situation.

Parents, instead of withholding information from adolescents must recognize that adolescence is a period of psychological, social and biological transition between childhood and adulthood. And the young minds of the adolescents are in a state of constant struggle to make sense of and adjust with the rapid physical and psychological changes that take place in their bodies.

Easy access to the internet, television and movies add to growing children's confusion as they cannot decide upon what constitutes responsible and acceptable behaviour. As a result, most adolescents have skewed ideas and in absence of proper guidance from parents in the first place; they prefer to discuss their doubts and queries within their own peer group. This further misleads them as their peers more or less belong to the same age group and are in the same troubled state of mind.

A healthy discussion with the child is the best tool to ease out problems that he / she faces as an adolescent. They should share their own adolescent experiences with the child. Henceforth, parents need to be more a friend than a “traditional conservative” parent to guide their adolescent child in this crucial phase of their life.

Therefore, it is essential to provide accurate and adequate information to adolescents. Parents must shed their inhibitions and become the trust - worthy source of such information for their teens.
