Behavioral Strategies

Special children have special characteristics attached to them. For instance, they may take longer time to comprehend things or have severe mental retardation or developmental delays. What is normal behaviour for them may seem misbehaviour to others. This apparent disobedience may have more to do with lack of communication skills and motor planning ability.

We as parents and as society instead of neglecting them need to take extra care and pay more attention to their activities. As a parent, it is necessary to have faith and belief in the special educator, but co-operation is also demanded out of the parents.

They need to guide the educators about their child’s particular issues. Helping the child learn may involve special tools & techniques, repetition, reinforcement or working with the school to get desired results. Advocating for the child’s education enables the parents to be effective member of the education team which is constantly striving hard to draw the best out of the child.

No doubt, dealing with a child with special needs is a challenge, but to see a behavioral change every parent needs to accept this challenge with open arms. To start with, one needs to narrow down to one particular behaviour for change. Keep the track of WHEN it occurs, WHERE it occurs, and most important the causal effect of this kind of behaviour. Finally, make him/her learn the desired behaviour.
